Welcome to 21things for the 21st Century Educator!

Pick a "Thing" and get started with training on using FREE web tools to integrate technology into your classroom!

The purpose of 21things4teachers is to provide "Just in Time” training through an online interface for K-12 educators based on the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers
(NETS-T). These standards are the basic technology skills every educator should possess. In the process, educators will develop their own skills and discover what students need in order to meet the NETS for Students, as well as online course requirement.

Participants who fulfill all of the requirements have the opportunity to earn SCECH’s or college credit. To learn more about enrolling in the 21things course from an approved Agency, check out the
"Partner Agencies" tab.

You could also check out the
"Customized Professional Development" option to offer it within your local district or take it independently. We hope you take advantage of this unique opportunity.

Integrating Technology into Instruction

Picture
Integrating technology into best practice instruction is a vital component of the 21things for the 21st Century Educator site.  Using the Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning's (McREL) "Classroom Instruction that Works" (CITW) framework, the 21things helps educators make connections between technology tools and best practice instructional strategies.  Participants in the 21things4teachers course will gain a thoughtful understanding of how to integrate nine strategies and the 21 "Things" to improve student achievement.

ISTE-NETS for Teachers

The International Society for Technology in Education created the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers in 2008.  The emphasis is on "using technology to learn and teach".

The purpose of
NETS for Teachers is to:
*  Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
*  Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessment
*  Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
*  Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
*  Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership

Where do you rate?

In determining technology proficiency for each "thing", participants consider the NETS-T ratings for skill and ability levels and their comparisons to common grading scales in education.  Click on the picture to access the document.

Project History and Updates

Picture
It began with four friends and instructional technology specialists who were looking for a way to train teachers on technology in a timely and cost-effective manner.  Free tools, tutorials, any-time training meeting the national technology standards were the goal. The site was originally created in 2008 by (l-r) Carolyn McCarthy (Shiawassee RESD/Clinton RESA), Melissa White (Ingham ISD), Dr. Jennifer Parker-Moore (Macomb ISD), the late Frank Miracola (Macomb ISD).  Jan Harding (Macomb ISD, far right) was added to the project team in June of 2011.

If you are a returning visitor to the 21things site, we hope you noticed our changes to reflect new tools and technologies! In August 2012, the site went through a critical review by Instructional Technologists from 30 ISD's across Michigan.  Additional consideration came from feedback around the globe from teachers, administrators, and educational leaders.  New tools and improved assignments will lead to improved technology skills for all visitors to the site. Pre-Assess your Technology Skills
Personnel Skilled in Technology Assessment

2013 Survey Now Open!
Although Michigan reporting of technology is no longer required annually, school improvement teams still depend on this survey information to inform professional development, goals, and strategies.

To participate in the 2013 Personnel Skilled in Technology Assessment, click here to take the survey.  This survey will be open until October 31, 2013 and a data file can be prepared for your district.  For more information, contact Dr. Jennifer Parker-Moore by emailing jpmoore(AT)misd.net.
