Welcome to 21things for the 21st Century Educator!
Pick a "Thing" and get started with training on using FREE web tools to integrate technology into your classroom!
The purpose of 21things4teachers is to provide "Just in Time” training through an online interface for K-12 educators based on the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T). These standards are the basic technology skills every educator should possess. In the process, educators will develop their own skills and discover what students need in order to meet the NETS for Students, as well as online course requirement.
Participants who fulfill all of the requirements have the opportunity to earn SBCEU’s or college credit. To learn more about enrolling in the 21things course from an approved Agency, check out the"Partner Agencies"tab.
You could also check out the "Customized Professional Development"option to offer it within your local district or take it independently. We hope you take advantage of this unique opportunity.

Pre-Assess your Technology Skills
Personnel Skilled in Technology Assessment
2012 Survey Now Open!
Each year, Michigan school districts report to the state the number of teachers, administrators, and media specialists/librarians who are proficient in the use of technology. Many districts have elected to use the survey used in this course. New this year are questions about portable mobile devices and some minor revisions.
To participate in the 2012 Personnel Skilled in Technology Assessment, click here to take the survey. This survey will be open until October 31, 2012 and a data file will be sent to your local district through your REMC. For further information, contact your REMC Director, or one of the 21things Project Partners.

Project History and Updates
It began with four friends and instructional technology specialists who were looking for a way to train teachers on technology in a timely and cost-effective manner. Free tools, tutorials, any-time training meeting the national technology standards were the goal. The site was originally created in 2008 by (l-r) Melissa White (Ingham ISD), Dr. Jennifer Parker-Moore (Macomb ISD), the late Frank Miracola (Macomb ISD) and Carolyn McCarthy (Shiawassee RESD/Clinton RESA). Jan Harding (Macomb ISD) was added to the project team in June of 2011.
If you are a returning visitor to the 21things site, we hope you noticed our changes to reflect new tools and technologies! In August 2011, the site went through a critical review by Instructional Technologists from 30 ISD's across Michigan. Additional consideration came from feedback around the globe from teachers, administrators, and educational leaders. New tools, a modified list of "things", and improved assignments will lead to improved technology skills for all visitors to the site. Click for an overview by the creators of the 21 things project.

ISTE-NETS for TeachersThe International Society for Technology in Education created the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers in 2008. The emphasis is on "using technology to learn and teach".
The purpose of NETS for Teachers is to: * Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity * Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessment * Model Digital-Age Work and Learning * Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility * Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership | Where do you rate?
In determining technology proficiency for each "thing", consider the NETS-T ratings for skill and ability levels and their comparisons to common grading scales in education. Click on the picture to access the document. |
Integrating Technology into Instruction
Integrating Technology into Instruction is a vital component of the 21things for the 21st Century Educator site. In Robert Marzano, Debra Pickering, and Jane Pollock's "Classroom Instruction that Works" (2004), nine instructional strategies for successfully raising student achievement scores are presented. Sherri Miller took this one step further in her presentation to the Virginia Society for Technology in Education, "Putting the Pieces Together: Integrating Technology with the Marzano Instructional Strategies" which gave concrete examples of how to integrate technology into instruction.
In 2009, Dr. Robert Marzano expanded the Marzano 9 to include a meta-analysis database of 22 instructional strategies. Check out the technology connections, and find more information about the researched strategies at the Marzano Research Laboratories.
